Zheng Yi Sao - a deeper dive
Hello everyone!
Here’s all the extra information for the episode Zheng Yi Sao that I put on Social Media throughout the two weeks that the episode was current.
These are in chronological order to Zheng Yi Sao.
Episode summary: Zheng Yi Sao lived in China during the late 1700s and early 1800s, and from humble beginnings ended up becoming not only history’s most successful female pirate, but one of the most successful pirates in history, period. Zheng Yi Sao is the epitome of the phrase ‘Well-behaved women seldom make history’, and her story is fascinating!
Hello everyone! I love Zheng Yi Sao’s story, and am so excited to share it! However, there’s hardly any visual documentation of her life.
There may not be any portraits of her, but her story is so amazing that we’re still telling it all these years after her death.
I hope you’ll be understanding of the fact that there won’t be much visual content this cycle, and trust me when I say that Zheng Yi Sao’s story is good enough to not need it! xoxo, April
Before I tell you about Zheng Yi Sao, I’m going to tell you about her husband Zheng Yi. How do you think Zheng Yi managed to get the pirates to band together?
After her husband’s death, Zheng Yi Sao took over the command of his Pirate Confederation. If you were in her shoes, what moves would you make to consolidate power?
A description of a pirate battle! I think this clip is a great example of Zheng Yi Sao’s leadership, and shows why other pirates were so willing to work with her!
Life could be rough as a pirate! This clip describes an especially brutal raiding campaign that Zheng Yi Sao led.
Chinese officials eventually asked the Portuguese for help to stop Zheng Yi Sao’s raids. Do you think this was the best strategy to stop Zheng Yi Sao and all her pirates?
A huge blunder by the Provincial Fleet! What’s another tactical error in history you can think of?
The Guangdong province of China. The area of China that Zheng Yi Sao and her pirate crew controlled. That’s a lot of coastline! Do you think Zheng Yi Sao buried any treasure somewhere on all that beach?
I said it before, and I’ll say it again: Zheng Yi Sao wasn’t just the most successful woman pirate, she was one of the most successful pirates period!
I really enjoyed telling Zheng Yi Sao’s story this cycle! There wasn’t much visual content on her to work with, but I think her story was good enough to carry the weight! Do you agree?
The saying ‘Well-behaved women seldom make history’ definitely applies to Zheng Yi Sao! What does that saying mean to you?
